Surface Water Resource Program

Monitoring of Water Networks – Instalation and operation of hydrometeorological system, telemetry systems, water quality and sedimentometry systems, and also monitor water levels in reservoirs. Operation of the national hydrometeorology network which comprises about 2,500 stations and 200 telemetry stations. More than 240,000 data on hydrology are collected, collated and stored each year.

Flood forecasting and flood alerts – Instalation and operation of systems for water levels prediction and alert activation. Currently, there are systems installed for predicting the water levels in Manaus and in the Pantanal in Mato Grosso state, and another one regarding a water level alert for the Rio Doce river basin.

Studies, Surveys and Hydrologic Mapping – Hydrology interpretation studies and theme-based hydrology maps generation. Part of the hydrologic studies are designed to support land use schemes and reduce environmental impacts in the Araranguá coal basin. Development of systems for the integration of hydrologic data.

Groundwater Resource Program

Registration, Recuperation, Revitalization and Installation of Wells – Registration of wells and water users. It is being completed the Resource Atlas covering the states with a semi-arid climate. It is being commenced the revitalization and registration of wells in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states and in the north-east of Brazil..

Hydrogeological Mapping, Studies and Surveys – Hydrogeological research and hydrogeological map in a GIS platform. Studies in small sedimentary basins in semi-arid regions of the country are carried out, as are hydrogeological studies and mapping in Rio Grande do Sul state, Jequitinhonha valley and on the southeastern edge of the Parnaíba.

Groundwater Information System - SIAGAS – Involves the collection, collation and storage of hydrogeology data in the system and its distribution to those agencies involved in hydrogeological management and use.

Research and Innovation

CPRM’s activities in the water resource area include Research and Innovation aiming at technical-scientific studies in water resources and stimulating the adoption of new monitoring technologies.

The Fluvial Dynamic Project was one of the first initiatives of the CPRM Department of Hydrology in Research and Innovation. Started in 2007, this study seeks to adopt remote sensing techniques in hydrologic monitoring. This work is carried out in international technical cooperation with the IRD, Research and Development Institute, in France. Numerous field activities have been conducted applying this technology in various regions in Brazil and it has been shown to be advantageous for collecting hydrologic data at a low cost.

Complementarily to this work, the research project entitled Studies for the Hydrologic Characterization of Soils has been proposed. One of the main results is HYBRAS – Hydrophysical Database for Brazilian Soils, which is an extensive compilation of hydraulic property data in Brazilian soils, besides other soil atributes, with a description of the methods of determination of these properties.

The Hydrochemical and Isotope Study Project is a strategic challenge to CPRM in the national hydrologic scene. Its activities started in 2013 and its objective is mainly to assimilate and divulge knowledge and the use of isotope technology as a rational tool in the management of water resources. The first GNIP – Global Network of Isotopes in Precipitation – was established in 2017 in order to contribute to reestablishing rain isotope monitoring conducted during the 1980s and 1990s in Brazil.
